Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
