Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
However, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that included little previously unseen information.
