England along with Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
