A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
